Your phone is your map, wallet, ticket, translator and emergency contact list. The trick is to set it up before you're standing in an arrivals hall on airport Wi-Fi.

Setting up the two most important ones
Offline maps (Google Maps)
- Search for your destination city, open its place page, and choose Download offline map.
- Downloaded areas expire. Google updates them over Wi-Fi when they're within 15 days of expiry, so refresh them before long trips.
- Offline, transit and cycling directions aren't available, and driving has no live traffic.
- Some countries and regions can't be downloaded at all. Check before you rely on it.
Offline translation (Google Translate)
- Download the language packs for your destination. Google notes the files are small.
- For some languages, you can also point your camera at a sign or menu for instant translation.
Your eSIM
- Install it on Wi-Fi before you fly. Apple's guide covers QR-code and carrier setup on iPhone.
Privacy on the road
Public Wi-Fi is convenient but not private. Stick to HTTPS sites and trusted apps, keep your phone's software updated, and consider a reputable VPN on open networks. Lock screens with a PIN — not just face or fingerprint — before crossing borders or going out at night.
